Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Enhancement: The Roosevelt Island Bridge Project
Learn how the NY DOT approved the LowPro 12/8 transforming comfort and safety for pedestrians and cyclists on Roosevelt Island Bridge.
The Roosevelt Island Bridge, part of the New York skyline since 1955, connects Manhattan to Astoria, Queens, via Roosevelt Island. Before its construction, the only way vehicles could reach the island was via an elevator on the nearby Queensboro Bridge.
Due to the bridge's unique construction, cyclists and pedestrians were originally able to see through the metal grates into the East River. Which understandably put both cyclists and pedestrians off cycling across the bridge.
The Brief
The New York DoT sought a solution that would make cyclists and pedestrians feel more comfortable by covering the sections of the bridge that currently feature metal grates. They wanted to address the issue by covering the metal grates on the bridge, with the intention of serving two purposes;
- Reduce the distractions and worries of the cyclists and pedestrian users of the bridge.
- Provide cyclist-friendly cover for all weather conditions, ensuring smooth and safe passage.
How did the LowPro 12/8 help?
Recently approved by the New York Department of Transportation, the LowPro 12/8 was chosen as the solution for this project. The LowPro 12/8 combined with the installation of a number of infills fit over the existing metal grids on the bridge. The LowPro 12/8 is built to withstand the weight of traffic passing over it, ensuring safety and durability. Users also benefit from the surface of the plate’s anti-slip design, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety against New York weather. The infills were installed to address any trip hazards that might occur when two of the plates are placed side by side.
When speaking to Peter Creighton, Business Development Director USA, he said “The NY DOT engaged us as they were having safety issues with the bicycle lane on the Roosevelt Island Bridge, having reviewed the challenges associated with the site it was deemed that building a cycle lane using Low Pro 12/8 was the preferred option.”
In an article by the LIC Post, Christian Murray states “The journey for bicyclists crossing the Roosevelt Island Bridge, which links Vernon Boulevard in Astoria to the island, has got a whole lot safer.”
